I was talking a a woman at the pool today… Her 2 and a half year old goes to sleep between 5:30 and 6pm and wakes up between 7 and 7:30am. In addition to this FOURTEEN hours of sleep, she also takes a 2 hour nap each day…. Which means she is only awake for 8 hours a day!!! The dream child!! This mother is only working 8 hours a day!!!! And she was complaining that it was hard to get to the pool with all that sleeping…. Sounds like heaven to me. Can I get paid overtime for working almost twice as many hours per day? Tot sleeps about 9 and a half hours a day, maybe 10 if I’m lucky, unless she wakes up overnight, then it’s less. Though maybe this other child is depressed. Isn’t all that sleeping a sign of depression? or maybe they drug her…. maybe they’re on to something – slipping her Mickies. OH, and this child still sleeps in a crib – she doesn’t even try to climb out… She just went to therapy for upper arm strength. That mother doesn’t even have to worry about what her child is getting into, because she can’t get into much…. Tot, on the other hand, will drag a chair all the way across the room to climb up to a shelf that should be out of reach.
So, after lamenting on my around the clock mom duty, I was curious as to what is normal for a 2 year old, and I was pretty sure that neither of these kids were normal. I googled “average amount of sleep for a 2 year old”, and found this: How to put a Two Year old to sleep… - HA, manical laughter…. HAHA Tot laughs at that. I do all that, and no effect. Oh except for the “don’t skip naps” instruction… Cause THAT one does have an effect – Tot doesn’t go to sleep until 11 or 12pm or she wakes up in the middle of the night for an hour or two. Seriously!!! Two year olds typically average 13 hours of sleep a day? Oh, how I wish.
Here’s our latest adventure – assembling cabinets together – maybe she is a vampire or zombie after all? Doesn’t she look a little like Count Drac or rather Count Tot in her little mini coffin? She loved making them and then laid in them for hours minutes on end.
As for me, just call me Zombie-mom. Ohhh, update of my sleep quest – the Ear, Nose & Throat specialist tells me I probably have multiple sleep issues…. yeah, and one of them is 34″ high. At least her tantrums seem to have subsided – I’m suspecting low blood sugar, since she lost her appetite during her dual ear infections. As a final note, I present evidence of my sleep depravity – I was actually crying watching Miss Spider’s Sunnypatch friends – ackk! Commit me!!! then I could actually get some sleep….
